Overview

Applying for a promotion

Promotion Assessment Panels are run when there’s an organisational requirement. Application details and criteria are through an Intranet news item.

The panel will be chaired by someone at least one grade higher than the grade being assessed for. Panels will have a maximum of three members. If HR are not on the panel, members will be briefed on the process, best practice and employment law

1) Discuss your application with your Development Manager (DM). Use the Am I Ready? Guide to prepare and as a basis for this discussion.

You must have the written support of your DM to proceed to the next stage.

2) Complete the Promotion application form form with your DM.

3) Submit your form to HR by the closing date. Use ‘Promotion Application Form’ as the email heading.

4) If you are successful at the sift stage you will be invited to interview. If you have any personal objections to the panel, email the Head of HR immediately.

If you are unsuccessful at this stage you will receive feedback through your DM.

5) Interviews will be competency based, using the Civil Service Competency Framework.  CS Competency Framework You’ll be expected to have developed the leadership qualities in the leadership qualities framework.

6) If you are successful you will be approved for promotion to the higher grade. The promotion will come into effect when the Delivery and Resourcing Team identify space at the higher level.

Promotion approvals last 12 months. If you haven’t been placed in a higher grade role within that time you’ll need to apply again through the promotion process.

If you are unsuccessful you will be given feedback.
