Promotions guide Guide

4. Temporary promotion

Temporary promotions may be awarded when:

  • the role has been approved by Policy Committee
  • Corporate Committee has agreed that a temporary promotion can be paid
  • DART has confirmed that they cannot appoint anyone from the Pool or the CSU
  • filling a vacancy to cover for a long term absence (where the person is likely to return)
  • filling the gap whilst the vacancy is advertised

The job will be advertised on level transfer only by the Flexible Resourcing Pool during the temporary promotion period, usually six months. If you have been approved from promotion to that level by the Panel you can apply.

The person filling it temporarily will be able to compete for it on substantive promotion, or extend the length of the temporary promotion if there is an exception, like:

  • unexpected shortages in a particular grade
  • people already in the grade are not applying for the roles
  • people already in the grade have applied for the roles but are not considered suitable
  • insufficient applicants for positions
  • urgent business needs and we need to operate at speed
  • specialist skills needed that requires a professional qualification/expertise
