Broadband Project

Rural broadband

Fast broadband has transformed the way people live and do business. But it doesn’t always make economic sense for private sector companies to invest in the infrastructure (like cables) in rural areas or those that are harder to reach.

We are providing money (£530 million during the current Spending Review period) to help stimulate private sector investment in broadband and to ensure that the benefits of improved broadband infrastructure reach beyond the limits of where it is commercially viable to install it.

Urban broadband

We are investing £150 million in ‘super-connected cities’ across the UK with access to 80-100Mbps broadband speeds.

Super-connected cities will benefit from increased access to ultrafast broadband (80-100 Megabits per second (Mbps), and large areas of public wireless internet (wifi) access.
