Flexible working guide Guide

3. Flexi hours

A standard working week is 36 hours (41 hours less 5 hours for lunch breaks). The standard day is 7 hours 12 minutes. Under the standard scheme you’re required to be present between 10.00 – 12.00 a.m. and 14.00 – 16.00 pm, known as “core time”. With your manager’s agreement, you can:

  • vary your time of arrival and departure
  • vary the length and timing of your lunch break
  • take time off if you work extra hours

However:

  • your core time should not exceed 6 hours
  • your lunch break should be a minimum 30 minutes and maximum 2 hours.

You can also request flexibility during core hours. Discuss this with your  manager, and your development and activity managers.

Credits and deficits

You are responsible for recording your arrival and departure times. You can carry over a maximum credit in working hours of 2 days or a deficit of 1.5 days. This can only be exceeded in exceptional circumstances with your manager’s permission and should be brought within normal limits as soon as possible. If you carry over a deficit which has not been approved you may lose your flexible working privileges or have to repay the deficit through your pay or annual leave.

You can work overtime above your hours. These should be recorded separately from your flexible hours. You can also take a maximum of 2 days flexi leave a month.
