Using evidence in policymaking guide Guide

4. Commissioning research

After identifying and agreeing an evidence need, consider whether this evidence already exists or if it can be obtained from an existing source using internal resources.

Where evidence doesn’t exist or isn’t available, it may be necessary to commission primary research and/or data analysis.

EAU holds the Department’s research budget. Research spend is split across the following five budgets.  All spend across these budgets must be approved by the Head of EAU.

Budget streams

Policy research and evaluation (PRE)

For research to inform policy development, appraisal and evaluation.

Strategic analysis

For the provision of data or survey questions in existing external sources.

Culture and Sport Evidence (CASE)

Funds a programme of strategic research to support the cross-cutting evidence needs of ACME and its ALBs (Arts Council England, English Heritage, Sport England)

Taking Part survey

For the Department’s Taking Part survey.

Olympic meta-evaluation

This budget funds a major evaluation of the impacts and legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Once an evidence need has been identified, contact EAU at the earliest opportunity to help you identify whether ACME funded primary research is necessary and whether budget is available. EAU can also provide advice on developing a research specification.
